I had been thinking of learning violin because of its sweet and adorable music. I am lucky enough to tell that I got Jay Cheng as my violin teacher whose view about the violin world is very admirable. He plays very fantastically which drags people towards him. At the same time, he teaches very well in quite understandable format. He has the proper knowledge about how a violin must be played. He always teaches with great enthusiasm and is very active all the time. He is simply great and fun loving person.

I love that young teacher Jay! Yeah, young teacher, as I am old enough to be his mother.  (A young mother I must have been!) I had been through five teachers, some good some not so, but Jay is now my favorite of all teachers. I love him not only as a teacher but as a person. And I am working hard to make myself his favorite student.

If anyone wishes to ask me more about Jay as a teacher, please feel free to leave a message “About Jay” with your phone number in my email  (violinpiano@hotmail.co.UK)  and I will call you back ASAP. BTW I am also an adult learner of the piano and if anyone does or has the intention to do the same, we may talk to each other.

From no experience with violin and no classical music background to a Grade 1 high merit pass in six months, i owe Jay many unspoken thanks. I have been guided by a very experienced hand indeed! Truly appreciate his tips on smart practice; his ability to identify the root of problem in my playing technique; for being extremely patient; for not being a textbook teacher; for inspiring expression and spontaneity; and of course, for cementing my passion for violin. Thank you.

It was daunting to start learning music at 37 without any prior training but Jay made it simple and enjoyable. Jay’s a good and encouraging coach, and is clearly passionate about the instrument.

Learning under Jay has been both enjoyable and enriching. To me, being able to play expressively – with emotions – is very important. Not only did my techniques improve, I have also learnt how to play musically – bringing out the dynamics, moods and colours of the music. Jay is also approachable. In sum, a good teacher and a good friend.

Jay is a dedicated teacher with a flair in music and passion in teaching. He listens to the advice of his students on how to improve his “class rules”, showing that he is a flexible person who values feedback. He is patient and committed.

When I first approached Jay to customise a short introductory course to violin for me I was amazed at how quickly he was in packaging a course to meet my requirements, and able to start the lesson at short notice.

I have been told that the violin is a difficult instrument to learn – and it would be even harder to teach it.  Jay has somehow made it look so easy – I believe he has put in a lot of hard work to achieve that. He is constantly asking for feedback on his teaching so that he learns and grows (as a teacher) along with his students. It is easy to tell, in the short course of my lessons with him, that he is genuinely passionate about the instrument and even more so in imparting skills to his students. Jay’s firmness in insisting on the correct posture and hand positions all the time certainly helps to lay a good basic foundation for me.

Learning the violin can be fun and relaxing. Jay’s method of teaching is definitely enjoyable and interesting. I have learned new techniques and to add emotions and feelings into playing the violin. Jay’s strengths are patience and being passionate about teaching.

Though a bit naggy sometimes, Jay knows what he is teaching, and I find him passionate and committed. Lessons are relatively interesting.

Learning the violin is just like learning any other practical instrument – you need to pay attention and practise. It is fun playing music and even better once you’re up on the stage with an ensemble. Jay is a competent teacher that sets a good example for his students.

Lessons are fun, interesting and very detailed. A very patient teacher.
